Polypropylene Yarn Spinning Oil: Functions in Fiber Processing

In the production of polypropylene filaments or staple fibers, polypropylene yarn spinning oil serves as a process aid. It is applied to the fiber surface after extrusion and before drawing. Unlike fabric softeners, this PP spinning oil needs to reduce friction, control static charge, and keep the filament bundle together during high-speed winding.

A properly formulated fiber lubricant for polypropylene typically contains a base oil, an antistatic agent, and an emulsifier. The lubricant lowers the friction between the yarn and metal guides. Static buildup is a common issue with polypropylene because of its hydrophobic nature. Without an effective PP spinning oil, the filaments tend to repel each other, causing broken ends or uneven packages.

For industrial users, the application rate of polypropylene yarn spinning oil matters. Fine denier yarns (below 1.5 denier per filament) often require an oil pickup of 0.8% to 1.2% by weight. Coarser deniers can run with 0.4% to 0.6%. Too little oil leads to hairiness; too much oil may cause spots in dyeing or lamination. A stable yarn finish agent should not turn yellow after heat setting, which is important for light挠漀氀漀爀攀搀 PP fabrics.

Some production lines use heat爠攀猀椀猀琀愀渀琀 polypropylene yarn spinning oil for drawn texturing or high琠攀洀瀀攀爀愀琀甀爀攀 godet rolls. Conventional oils tend to evaporate or form residues above 150°C. Residues build up on hot rolls and eventually scratch the yarn. Heat爠攀猀椀猀琀愀渀琀 PP spinning oil based on modified silicone leaves fewer deposits, extending cleaning intervals from one week to about four weeks.

Storage of fiber lubricant for polypropylene requires protection from freezing. Emulsion琠礀瀀攀 yarn finish agents may break if stored below 5°C. Diluted working emulsions should be used within 24 hours to prevent bacterial growth and pH drift.

Choosing a suitable polypropylene yarn spinning oil helps maintain stable spinning conditions. The correct oil type and pickup rate reduce broken filaments and guide wear, supporting consistent yarn quality.
